One of the most beautiful qualities about Janelle Monae is that she is not some outrageous character when she is interviewed. You feel like she’s someone who is talking to you as if you were sitting across from her at a table in a coffee shop, just pouring her thoughts into your ears. It is an absolute 180 from her style and energy on stage, but amazingly, it never stops being a positive feeling. Her casual discussion still feels like it’s meant to lift your spirits with its message, just like her electrifying music.

I mean it, people. Pick up this album. It doesn’t want you to fall in love, or kill yourself, or destroy the establishment, or get caught up in pride. It wants to simply tell a story that moves your soul and moves your feet. This is who Janelle Monae is, and that is the main reason why I look up to her as an artist: her message transmits through her sense-striking talent, and her calm demeanor.
